The Regis University College for Professional Studies Master of Arts in Marriage and Family Therapy degree prepares students for careers as marriage and family therapists who treat mental and emotional disorders and promote optimum relational health through a systemic, holistic approach. With a supportive learning environment that is highly interactive, the MA in Marriage and Family Therapy program fosters an open culture of social, relational, and cross–cultural contexts of learning essential for effective therapist training.

In addition to a strong foundation of coursework, the MA in Marriage and Family Therapy curriculum provides hands–on training through 6 credit hours of Practicum in the department’s state–of–the–art counseling laboratory. Students gain additional clinical experience through supervised internships at local mental health counseling agencies.

Careers

Graduates with a Master of Arts in Marriage and Family Therapy are qualified for careers as marriage and family therapists. Marriage and Family Therapy is one of the core mental health disciplines and is based on research and the theory that mental illness and family problems are best treated in a family context. In Marriage and Family Therapy, the unit of intervention and treatment is not the individual person, even if only a single person is interviewed. Instead, the focus is systemic and relational. Potential careers include positions in the following settings:

Marriage and Family Therapy (18 cedits)

The MFT certificate is intended for psychotherapy professionals in the community already having a master's degree in counseling and/or those who practice as psychotherapists in Colorado; unlicensed state registered psychotherapists with a completed master's degree in counseling or a closely related field; licensed professional counselors; licensed psychologists; or licensed clinical social workers.

This certificate plan is also available to current students who are admitted to the MAC degree program who wish to enhance their clinical expertise and training beyond the 48-credit hour requirement.

Certificate in Counseling Children and Adolescents (18 cedits)

The Certificate in Counseling Children and Adolescents (CCA) is designed to prepare professional counselors who wish to specialize in counseling children and adolescents. The certificate is a planned program of study which includes 18 graduate credits (6 courses). Certificate coursework is offered in evening formats so that students may complete the coursework within 1 calendar year. This certificate is designed for community professionals with a Master’s degree in counseling or closely related area of clinical psychotherapy are eligible for admission to the certificate program. Current graduate students in the MAC program may also be admitted to the CCA certificate program concurrently during their Master’s degree coursework. The CCA certificate cannot be awarded to current students until the semester following graduation from the MAC program and completion of the certificate coursework.

Transformative Counseling Certificate (18 credits)

The Post-Graduate Certificate in Transformative Counseling is designed to prepare professional counselors who wish to learn transformative learning methodologies that address community and global issues and the complex psychological processes of change required to address issues of meaning, values, and a just existence by individuals from a community and cultural perspective. The certificate is a planned program of study which includes 18 graduate credits (six courses). Certificate course work is offered in evening formats so that student may complete the course work within one calendar year.
